I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship the past couple days. I feel this word really needs to be re-defined. This first came into my mind way back when I had a short conversation with Matthew Ebel about “digital circles”, basically meaning who you are connected to online via blog posts, twitter, Second Life, IM, etc. Then Kathleen Danielson came up with the great idea that you don’t actually consummate the friendship until you meet in real life.
So my question is simple. How do you define what a friend is? I know what my real life friends are. I see them, interact with them, go out with them, and share things with them. But how would you describe someone you interact with on various Social Media sites, who may even live in a different country, but you have never actually met. Surely this is different than a real life friend. You could call them an acquaintance, but that seems far to impersonal for the amount of interaction going on.
What are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments below if you wish.
So I downloaded WordPress for iPhone and upgraded to WP 2.6. This is my first attempt at a mobile post. It’s not too bad. I thought it would be worse writing from the iPhone’s touch screen. The hardest part was upgrading the version in GoDaddy’s hard to use interface.
Anyway I realize I have been a bad blogger and I am going to make an effort not to leave this alone for so long. Who knows… Maybe I’ll even get a reader or two.
Well, it is the eve of PodCamp Philly. I drove in to stay at my parents today and have to say I am really excited. It will be great to catch up with some friends and meet new ones for the first time in real life. I realize I haven’t been blogging (or Utterz-ing) much, but that is going to change and I am hoping this podcamp is just the thing to get me started. My wife and kids will be chillaxing with my parents and then we’ll be going to meet an old friend after dinner.
Not sure if I am bringing the laptop or not, on account of the rain, but I’ll have the mobile with me and of course will be twittering along the way. If you’re at podcamp and want to meet up, just drop me a line at bpolensky at gmail dot com!
I have not blogged in far too long. I had this whole idea about new media invading my old traditional life floating around in my head but never got around to writing it down. Maybe I will in a few days.
Anyway, tomorrow I start my new tenure at a different gym. I have slacked off in the exercise department far too much as of late. My old gym couldn’t get it’s act together to actually send billings to my bank each month. I decided I had enough. I found a place that is bigger, cleaner, and cheaper. It actually has tanning and a personal trainer too. So I figure there is no reason why I can’t slim down and lose the gut by the end of summer. The hard part will be getting up early in the morning, but we’ll see how it goes tomorrow…
